Silver Jewelry and Turkish Tradition
Anatolia, located on the peninsula
of Asia Minor, is the renowned
center of Turkey's bustling jewelry
industry. Throughout history, many
civilizations have inhabited this
region, bringing with them their own
distinct styles and techniques for
producing both religious and
artistic objects. Byzantines,
Hittites, Indians, Lydians,
Ottomans, Phrygians, Romans, Seljuks,
and Urartians all ruled Anatolia
over the course of history, and
their cultural heritage is evident
today in the designs of Silver
Ottoman.
Because of the many civilizations
that inhabited Anatolia, the
jewelry industry which has
flourished there has yielded a
variety of production methods and
artistic expressions specific to
Turkey. Included in these are
Telkari (filigree), savat (niello),
and hasir (wickerwork).
The Turkish jewelry industry is
steeped in tradition. Its designs
reflect its rich history. Its
heritage is celebrated in Silver
Ottoman's jewelry collection.
The Wearable Art of Telkari
The word "Tel" in Turkish means
"wire", and the art of using wire to
make gold or silver jewelry is
called "Telkari."
The Silver Ottoman's selection of
Telkari jewelry is handmade from 925
silver ore, the purest silver
available. The creation of this
lavish jewelry is a very elaborate
process, requiring great expertise
and patience. The silver is first
melted and then poured into a mould
that yields thin rods measuring a
millimeter in diameter. Next, the
rods are transformed into wires by
being drawn through a perforated
steel plate. Once the wires are
ready, master craftsmen create each
design by hand. Finally, the tiny
circular pieces are welded together.
Telkari is very popular in Turkey
and is often used in making belts,
cigarette holders, coffee cup
holders, mirror frames, tobacco
boxes, and trays, as well as
jewelry.
The art of Telkari is centuries old,
yet its beauty is everlasting. Its
delicate silver lace design speaks
to the hearts of women everywhere.

Caring for Your Telkari Jewelry
For Telkari jewelry embellished with
stones, polish with a soft cloth
specially made for cleaning silver.
A regular eraser may also be used.
If you are not satisfied with the
results, try a liquid cleaner.
However, do not immerse your jewelry
in the liquid solution for more than
one minute, and never use a liquid
cleaner if your Telkari jewelry has
blue stones.
